It is a bittersweet moment because today we are also announcing that not only are we closing our production space at The Urban Monk Fermentary and Takeaways, but we are also commencing the wind up of The Urban Monk business. This has been a very difficult decision to make and one that has not been made lightly. 😢 We have loved making New Zealand’s first ever certified organic sauerkraut over the years and have met some amazing people along the journey. However, it is time to change direction and discover what comes next.
You will be able to continue buying our range through your normal outlets and our webstore through till the end of the year (or as long as stocks last).
Thank you to all of our fabulous customers and supporters - we are so grateful to you for your continued loyalty to our little business.

For the Urban Monk, 2023 has been a significant year because we transitioned into our fourth production space, which this time includes our own shop and toastie place. It is amazing to reflect that it was back in 2012 that the idea for the Urban Monk was dreamed up, and that is was in 2013 that it started to evolve into a fermented foods concept. The business was registered in 2014 while me and some mates and colleagues were getting the Food Resilience Network underway.
So 2024 will see us celebrating our TENTH ANNIVERSARY !!! Look out for some new things to mark the occasion 😊
It is also lovely to write this while visiting the back of Waihi Bush near Geraldine. I woke up this morning to really really really loud birdsong that seemed to come from all directions! 🐦 It’s encouraging to know that this still happens. Some of you will remember that we started producing our cultured goods at Waihi Bush farm, in the old oil bottling room for Waihi Bush flax oil. A lot has changed since then, but the trees are still here. Some of them are a thousand year old totara. It’s a bit humbling but also very inspiring. So I want to also send some thanks to those who dedicate themselves to caring for the earth 🌍 🌳.
